We set up this weekly practice sessions with the intention of offering a space for whoever is interested in working on their solo jazz, in improving their quality of movement, in exploring their relationship with music, or is in general curious about these things. The format will be quite loose: they are not thought as classes but rather as ‘guided practice’ or as a work-group.
– The practice is open to everyone and to people of every level
– Me or some other experienced dancer, will be present to supervise and organize the time of the practice
– I will provide themes, concepts, exercises or other material on every week (some examples below) and will be available for feedback, to exchange ideas or anything else.
– You can join and decide your level of engagement: you can just do your thing, work with your friends or ask for specific material. The only rule is that this time is not meant for partner dancing practice, so everyone will be encouraged to focus on their solo dancing.
– This is a ‘first-ever’ experiment, we will have to figure out details and fine tune things as we go, but the general aim is to help people interested in solo dancing come together, raise some awareness and establish a local community.
– Playing with levels
– Tools to assist improvisation (imaginary box etc…)
– Moves on ‘1’ and moves on ‘4’ , and how to transition between them.
– Circularity (kicks; whatever you do straight you can turn)
– Tools and exercises to get out of the box of ‘steps’ (dance only some counts, dance with essentials …)
– Sing and dance rhythms (group practice, call and response type)
– Phrasing
– Fast tempo
– Charleston
– More Charleston
– Interaction with the music
– Rhythm turns
– How to practice with a partner/group
– Classic combos
– Syncopations and add some tap-flavor to your dancing (more sounds!)
– Tap fundamentals
– All about kicks
– Less choices = more freedom (restrict ‘move’ choices and explore possibilities)
– How to look at videos (and steal from them)
